👁️ What is a Pterygium?

A pterygium (commonly called “surfer’s eye”) is a fleshy, non-cancerous growth of conjunctival tissue that starts on the white part of the eye and may extend onto the cornea. It is often caused by long-term exposure to UV light, dust, smoke, or wind.

While small pterygia may not need treatment, larger or growing ones can cause:

  • Irritation or redness

  • Blurry vision

  • Cosmetic concern

  • Distorted cornea (astigmatism)

🩺 When is Surgery Needed?

Dr. Md. Tangil Ahmed may recommend pterygium surgery if you have:

  • Pterygium encroaching on the cornea and affecting vision

  • Repeated inflammation or discomfort

  • Cosmetic concern due to noticeable appearance

  • Failed medical management with eye drops or lubricants

⚙️ Surgical Procedure by Dr. Md. Tangil Ahmed

1. Pre-Surgery Assessment

  • Slit-lamp examination and corneal evaluation

  • Visual acuity and astigmatism measurement

  • Evaluation of pterygium size and depth

2. Surgical Technique

  • Performed under local anesthesia

  • The pterygium is carefully excised (removed)

  • A conjunctival autograft (a piece of healthy tissue from the same eye) is used to cover the area and reduce recurrence

  • Modern sutureless (glue-based) techniques may be used for faster recovery and comfort

  • Procedure duration: ~20–30 minutes

3. Post-Surgery Care

  • Eye patch for a few hours or overnight

  • Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops for 2–4 weeks

  • Avoid dust, sunlight, and water exposure for a few days

  • Follow-up visits to monitor healing and visual outcome
